Manager, Waste & Recycling

Dollar Tree Chesapeake, VA (Onsite) Full-Time
Summary of Position:
Provides leadership for the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar Stores Recycling and Waste Team, who oversees those programs for the enterprise. Position will develop strategies to increase waste management savings through analyzing, monitoring and scheduling/right sizing, while maximizing opportunities for recycling services and revenues. The position works with both internal and external sources to facilitate solutions to ongoing issues and to standardize work practices. The Waste and Recycling Manager is responsible for overall program direction, leading client relationships, creating and executing waste, recycling, and sustainability strategies and ensuring efficient delivery of service to our stores, distribution centers, and corporate facilities. This position will report to the Director of Energy & Sustainability.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities listen in order of importance
  • Responsible for managing and guiding the company’s waste and recycling program needs across its portfolio of locations, inclusive of, but not limited to, containers, hauling, disposal, hazardous waste, and recycling services
  • Manages monthly and annual budget/spend by gathering and analyzing data in the establishment and/or maintenance of corporate business processes, procedures and policies, in all waste and recycling accounts (permanent waste, temp waste, haz waste, and recycling revenue)
  • Manage all vendor relationships pertaining to this work stream
  • Stays up-to-date on latest trends on waste and will seek to establish Dollar Tree Stores as a sustainability focused waste management leader in retail
  • Works to minimize company waste spend using processes, vendors, technology, people, and cost-reduction opportunities (recycling, back-hauling, right-sizing, right-hauling, etc.)
  • Works to minimize fines, citations, and violations as a result of deficiencies in waste services provided to the locations
  • Works with internal stakeholders to represent the department as a best-in-class organization with respect and integrity
  • Responsible for working with Strategic Sourcing & Procurement on potential bidding opportunities, vendor alignment, and service requests such as special projects, retrofits, etc.
  • Responsible for leading and managing the Waste Coordinator team.
  • Responsible for any report requests, whether based on frequency or on an ad-hoc basis as required by department management or internal stakeholders
  • Responsible for providing annual Sustainability, Environmental, and Social Governance or other reporting on waste and recycling activities
  • Responsible for exploring new technologies, processes, and vendors that will provide better, faster, more sustainable, and more cost-effective service to company’s locations, including store-based recycling and return programs, digital waste management, and special pick-up service providers.
  • Acts as a resource for field and store leaders, providing troubleshooting and escalation management as needed
  • Responsible for management of special projects on an as needed basis
  • Clarify and incorporate company goals, policies and priorities into waste and recycling strategy
  • Education of the broader facility team in waste and recycling
  • Follow up on work orders and invoices as required.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications- Summary of knowledge, experience and education required.

  • 5-7 years experience minimum in the waste and recycling industry, retail experience preferred but not mandatory
  • Knowledge of commercial/retail waste hauling and disposal services, recycling and hazardous waste programs and regulations, recycling commodity markets, sustainability practices in the waste and recycling industry, and industry best practices
  • Proficient in Excel and Microsoft Suite of products
  • Analysis experience with the ability to use financial and quantitative data to manage bottom line focus with sound financial controls.
  • Familiarity with query tools and web-based software applications.
  • Strong ability to handle working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work well with deadlines and reprioritize work assignments as needed.
  • Ability to work in a team atmosphere that has common vision, mission and goal.
  • Prefer a minimum of 3 years’ experience in managing teams of people.
  • Position may require nighttime, holiday and weekend hours based on business need.
  • Prefer BA or an associate degree with emphasis in Facility Management or Property Management, but not mandatory.
  • Knowledge of sustainability, facilities management, real estate, net zero waste strategies, and accounting principles and practices helpful.
