Summary: Engineering Project Manager Responsibilities in this position include the planning and successful completion of concurrent distribution center design and construction and material handling integrated systems through the complete project cycle. The successful candidate must be customer focused with the ability to clearly communicate, work within and promote a team environment, and maintain and nurture positive relationships with customers, vendors and peers.
Main responsibilities of a project manager during the lifecycle of a logistics automation project:
• Project Planning
o Participates in all technical aspects of the project as it relates to the building, the automated system technology, operational aspects and IT
o Manages the overall project timeline o Develops the budget
o Manages the tasks of the members of the team in terms of timeliness and quality
o Communicates well with management on project goals and cost
o Works cross-functionally with the focus on the project goals and timeline
o Manages the development of test plans, acceptance criteria
• Project Execution
o Accomplishes all project milestones on time
o Drives the project to be executed at or below budget o Manages all relevant sub-contractors
o Coordinates onsite activity
o Provides regular project updates to the project team and management
o Manages the commissioning and testing of the system from the customer perspectives
o Communicates with onsite operations, maintenance, architect, construction, material handling suppliers, internal IT (hardware and software)
o Provides regular updates to management on project status regarding cost, timeline, threats and opportunities
o Key contact to all parties involved
o Manages and negotiates change orders
o Shows flexibility and creativity, when unforeseen situations occur
o Escalates potential problems timely to allow for resolution
o Manages daily, weekly meetings with all parties involved as required by the phase of the project
• Project ramp-up
o Works well with operations to ramp-up the performance of the automated system technology under on-going production
o Identifies opportunities for training and improvements
o Actively manages the transfer of the project to operations
Technical Skills and Job Specific Tasks:
• Administers the engineering integrity of systems such that the design specifications are met with respect to functions, productivity, reliability, quality, and safety.
• Personally reviews and approves all major engineering decisions related to projects.
• Reviews methods, procedures, and equipment utilized in accomplishing project requirements and supervises continuing improvements in productivity and quality.
• Supervises the establishment of a comprehensive project schedule (including IT, Merchandising, Operations, and MHE Vendors) to meet project progress milestones.
• Organizes and oversees the staffing of the project.
• Supervises the forecasting of project costs and directs planning and control activities to obtain performance to forecast.
• Creates an environment within the project conducive to innovation, analytical objectivity and receptivity to new equipment and methods for exceeding operational requirements and reducing cost.
• Oversees the preparation, maintenance, and adherence to standards and procedures for progressive project management.
• Field travel to review project performance, vendor contract performance, and acceptance.
• Practice and promote good work habits, leading by example.
• Personally accepts concurrent assignments as Project Manager and develops engineering solutions as needed. Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent technical systems experience.
• System level working knowledge of Mechanical, PLC Controls and Software Engineering.
• 3-5 years technical systems experience in materials handling industry preferred.
• PMP preferred & 2+ years of Project Management experience.
Travel Requirements: •Travel required 35-50% of the time.
